In 2014 the City of Lafayette received a Walk and Wheel Grant from Kaiser Permanente to promote bicycle and pedestrian access within the community. Bike/walk audits and input sessions were held to gather citizen direction and ideas. 

Listed below are some of the key projects completed as a result of this grant.

Walk and Wheel Projects

Robust community engagement made it clear how important having safe and healthy alternate transportation options are to local residents and resulted in the following projects;

  1. An Active Transportation Map was developed to provide guidance along the Walk and Wheel (WAW) Route. The WAW Route assists to guide users to destinations throughout the City along a network of safer, low-stress bike and pedestrian routes. You can view these routes as an overview of the Walk and Wheel network or as part of the Lafayette Parks, Open Space & Trails Map.
  2. Wayfinding signage bearing the blue Lafayette Walk and Wheel logo was installed along the entire route to provide visibility for the program and to help users navigate the WAW Route.
  3. A multi-modal trail connection was created from Powerline Trail through Angevine Middle School grounds. In collaboration with Boulder Valley School District, a connection was built across school property to provide users access to the Highway 287 overpass footbridge from the Powerline Trail.
  4. Dedicated bike lanes were installed on W. Emma from S. Longmont Avenue to Caria Dr. A buffer lane was also installed on the north side of the street to separate bikers from parked cars.
  5. Sharrows (shared bike/car lanes) were installed along Harrison Avenue from E. Emma to Simpson to serve as an alternate route to Public Road
  6. A sidewalk connection along the east side of So. Public Road, north of Old Laramie Trail, was completed in 2016.
  7. A pedestrian connection is being considered from the South Public Road Trailhead into the SoLa business/residential development.

The Walk and Wheel Project is funded by a generous grant from Kaiser Permanente Colorado. In 2014 the City of Lafayette launched a two-year project to promote bicycling and walking within the community. Funding from a Kaiser Permanente Walk and Wheel grant is enabling the City to study current uses and gather resident input that will ultimately lead to the creation of an active transportation map and a prioritization of infrastructure enhancement projects.

* Help us identify ways to make it easier and safer for residents to get around on bike or foot in our community.

We will meet at 6:00 pm at each location for a brief training. Groups will be assigned to collect data from specific areas until 7:30 pm. You are encouraged to participate even if you cannot stay for the entire time.
