It has been brought to the City of Lafayette’s attention that members of Lafayette’s community, discovered racist and discriminatory incidents toward Latinx community members in the 1930’s in the City of Lafayette. These events have been extensively researched and documented.

City of Lafayette acknowledges that injustices of the past, which, in some instances, the City was a participant, continue to be deeply painful and have significant impact on the City’s Latinx community. In 1934, Rose Lavato Lueras, with her daughter Rosabelle Lueras Vargas at her side, fought bravely and persistently for the rights of Spanish Americans, Mexican Americans, and Mestizos to swim in the Lafayette public swimming pool. She was unsuccessful in realizing her dreams of equality and inclusion.

The Mayor and City Council of the City of Lafayette, Colorado, formally recognizes and express gratitude and appreciation for Rose Lueras, Rosabelle Lueras, and the other plaintiffs in the lawsuit. These events were forgotten as part of the City’s history. The City of Lafayette desires to share this story with its community, to acknowledge past racist and discriminatory incidents toward its citizens, and to make amends for past mistakes.

In recognition of Rose Lueras’ struggle, and in atonement for civil rights denied in the past, at a ceremony on December 17, the Lafayette City Council will dedicate The Rose Lueras Pool.
