The Lafayette Police Department is announcing a new prescription drug take back service offered to the citizens of Lafayette. During normal business hours, Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm, the police department will accept your unwanted prescription medications, assuring that they are properly disposed of.
Medications that we can accept include most prescription medications, patches and ointments. Also included are vitamins, over the counter medications, medication samples and pet medications.
We are not able to accept thermometers, needles (sharps), inhalers, aerosol cans, and liquids including hydrogen peroxide. We are also not able to accept bloody or infectious material.
This service is being offered to our citizens at no cost. We are not able to accept medications from businesses or clinics.
Prescription medications play an important role in the health of millions of Americans. Expired medications or unused drugs however, often stay in the back of cabinets for months or even years. These expired drugs can pose significant health hazards to toddlers, teens and even family pets. Some medications are so potent that even one dose could be fatal if accidentally ingested.
Many people dispose of their unwanted medication by flushing them down the toilet. Although there are drugs the FDA recommends destroying in this manner, traces of these drugs eventually make their way into our environment through our sewer systems, into our lakes and streams.
By utilizing our drug take back service we can protect others and our children from the hazards of these unwanted drugs. We also protect our environment, a win win situation for all. If you have unwanted prescription drugs please bring them to the Lafayette Police Department Records Division located at 451 North 111th Street. They will be placed in a secure drug collection unit and then get destroyed.
