[ARCHIVED] Don't Leave Pets in Vehicles

Pet Safety Chart

It is common to take your pet, usually dogs, out to run errands with you. But, did you know dogs cool themselves by panting and by releasing heat through their paws? The hot air and upholstery in vehicles prevents dogs from cooling themselves. In as little as 10 minutes your vehicle can reach temperatures which can seriously harm your pet. The Lafayette Municipal code prohibits confining a domestic animal in such a way that the animal is exposed to extreme temperature or weather conditions (such as in a hot vehicle). It is considered animal cruelty to subject your pet to such conditions and is punishable by fines and possible removal of your pet.

Symptoms of Heatstroke: Exaggerated panting, rapid or erratic pulse, salivation, anxious or staring expression, weakness and muscle tremors, lack of coordination, red tongue and lips which may eventually turn bluish, convulsions or vomiting, collapse, coma and death.

Emergency Treatment for Dogs: If your dog shows symptoms of heatstroke, immediately move the animal to a cool & shady place, wet the dog with cool water, fan to promote evaporation, do not apply ice, allow the dog to drink cool water and take the dog to a veterinarian as soon as possible for further treatment. Veterinarians may apply supportive measures such as intravenous fluids to rehydrate the animal and oxygen to prevent brain damage.

Keep your pet safe during the hot summer!
