The Lafayette Police Department is requesting that people in our community abide by the city ordinance restricting use of fireworks within the city limits. Due to the extreme fire danger and the June 14th executive order issued by our governor banning open burning statewide, officers of the police department will be strictly enforcing the law this year. In past it had been the practice to issue warnings in all but extreme cases. This year there will be no warnings issued. Officers will confiscate all illegal fireworks and cite those in possession or caught using the illegal fireworks. City ordinance outlaws all fireworks, not just the type that explode, including "sparklers and smoke bombs." Violators could face charges under city ordinance which carry a possible fine up to $1,000 and/or 90 days jail.
