A Lafayette resident received a call, from a party claiming to be a representative from the City, threating to turn water off if payment is not made immediately. This is a scam.
The City of Lafayette will never contact you by phone demanding payment or threatening water shut-off. If water shut-off is ever necessary, the City of Lafayette will first send a notice in the mail, second provide a door hanger at the physical address, and also give you time to make payment. The City of Lafayette will never ask for payment over the telephone.
Telephone scams such as this have become more and more prevalent from parties claiming to be with a variety of organizations, even the IRS, demanding payment and making various threats if payment is not made immediately. Never make payment over the telephone or provide credit/debit card information over the telephone until you have verified the request.
DO NOT FALL FOR THESE SCAMS. Please report any such attempts to the Lafayette Police Department.
