[ARCHIVED] "Can You Hear Me" phone scam alert

There is a current phone scam whereby a robocall tries to get an affirmative answer from you when asked if you can hear them.  Don't say yes.  According to the Better  Business Bureau, the call may be trying to sign you up for goods and services you never actually agreed to buy.  If you say yes to the caller, they will have a recording of your affirmative answer and can use it as an agreement to sign you up for a service or product, allowing them to try to hit your bank account for payment.  If you protest, the scammer will use your recorded "yes" as proof of a purchase agreement.  Consumers can avoid this scam by:

  • Not answering calls from unrecognized numbers
  • Hang up on unsolicited robocalls
  • Don't speak or push requested buttons from your phone in response to unsolicited robocalls

If  you think you've been a victim of this scam, contact your bank and credit card companies and ask them to flag your account.  Check your accounts daily.  The earlier you identify fraudulent charges, the easier it is to get your money back.
