On April 26, 2017 the Lafayette Police Department held a retirement reception for Sgt. Mark Battersby, an employee with the department for 41 years. Sgt. Battersby began his career on March 3, 1976 when the population of Lafayette was only 6,000 people.
Over the next 41 years Sgt. Battersby worked as a patrol officer, detective, patrol sergeant, lieutenant and commander. His true love and passion was being a part of the patrol division and interacting with the community. Sgt. Battersby started the first restorative justice program for our department, was the officer of the year for the Boulder County Optimist Club and served as the vice president of the East Boulder County Meals on Wheels.
One of Sgt. Battersby's biggest achievements while working for the Lafayette Police Department was saving the life of a child in 1977. This child later went on to work for the City of Lafayette and was in attendance at Sgt. Battersby's retirement celebration.
