The Collective – Community Arts Center celebrates their one-year anniversary on Thursday, February 15. The public is invited to a Coffee & Cookies Open House from 10 am – 3 pm on Thursday, February 15. The Collective will offer 2 drop in art projects. The Women’s Art- Persistent Path to Identity exhibit, which open on Tuesday, February 13, will be on display.
The Collective offers dynamic programming, including carefully curated art exhibits which rotate every 6 weeks; artist receptions, films, discussion, and workshops. 2018 exhibits include:
February 13 - March 31 – “Women’s Art, A Persistent Path to Identity” a variety of mediums from local artists, representing expressions of identity as women and as artists. The opening reception will be Fri., Feb. 16; 6 – 8 pm. Artists’ Salon (Moderated Discussion) Sun., Feb. 25, 3 - 4:30 pm. The artists of the Women’s Art Show are invited to speak informally and briefly about their art making and how it affects them.
April 1 – 30 – “Machine Language” In conjunction with LEAF (Lafayette Electronic Arts Festival) and the City of Lafayette, Machine Language explores the ongoing modulations in the relationship between machine and human; machines making art, machines as art, art of the machine and art in the machine. Opening reception will be Friday, April 6; 6 – 8 pm. Additional artists talks will be scheduled in conjunction with this exhibit.
May & June – The Collective will display “The Sonder Collection” a series of photographs and stories telling about the experiences of individuals and families living on the margins. They are stories of struggle and chance and bad luck and tough choices, but they are also the stories of hope and partnership and risk and strength.
The Collective, located in the rebuilt historic building at 201 N. Public Road, is home both to the City of Lafayette’s community arts center and the Arts & Cultural Resources Department. Visitors can expect to experience a welcoming, unpretentious space to engage in the arts through exhibits, networking opportunities, arts business development, social themes, lectures, author readings, and other programs. Beginning in April 2018, The Collective will host Noche de Cultura on First Fridays each month.
