[ARCHIVED] Lafayette Police Department steps up neighborhood patrols

lock car and garage

The Lafayette Police Department has been receiving inquiries about an increase in auto thefts, thefts from vehicles, and other thefts at and around residences. They have seen an increase in these types of crimes, as have communities throughout the area. Groups of individuals are moving from community to community with the intent to steal anything of value. The Lafayette Police Department has employed several strategies to both prevent future thefts and to apprehend these thieves. They have stepped up patrols in neighborhoods using marked patrol vehicles, unmarked vehicles, bicycle, and foot patrols.

Through the review of information received from victims and during officers’ patrol observations, the department has found that most of these crimes have occurred to victims who have left garage doors open and vehicles unlocked, which leaves valuables vulnerable and creates easy targets for thieves. During one weekend, officers on patrol in target areas found over 80 garage doors open unattended. Officers have spent time contacting residents, when possible, or securing doors and vehicles and leaving a business card.

The Lafayette Police Department is asking for the public’s help. Please secure your garages, your cars, and your property. We also ask that you look out for each other and call if you see anything out of the ordinary in your neighborhood. The Lafayette Police Department does not have staffing to monitor social media sites, so please call the Lafayette Police Department at 303-665-5571 -or- 303-441-4444 if you wish to make a police report or report suspicious activity. Residents are also encouraged to contact the department if you are interested in creating a Neighborhood Watch in your neighborhood.

Thank you for helping to keep the City of Lafayette a safe and enjoyable community to live in and visit.
