[ARCHIVED] Newly hired Sustainability Coordinator

Elizabeth Szorad, the City of Lafayette’s newly hired Sustainability Coordinator, will begin her employment with the City on May 3.

 Szorad has worked in sustainability for over 8 years, most recently as the Waste Zero Manager with Recology King CountyShe received a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Studieswith a minor in Law Societies and Justice and Human Rights from Washington State University. Szorad has served on many boards and committees including the Washington State Recycling Association BoardSolid Waste Advisory Committee – Seattle Public Utilities, and the Washington Recycling Organics Council Board. 

am overjoyed to begin my position with the City of Lafayette and to work with driven individuals that create innovative and resilient community services,” said Szorad. “I have a passion for community relations, sustainability, and designing public engagement campaigns and look forward to being at the forefront of sustainability with the City of Lafayette as we empower individuals to take positive actions within their neighborhoods.” 

The Sustainability Coordinator will focus on implementing the City’s first-ever Sustainability Plan, which reflects the values of the community and demonstrates leadership while balancing current and future environmental, economic, and social challenges. As the face of the sustainability function, this position provides leadership and coordination of complex projects and is responsible for tracking and reporting progress toward achievement of sustainability goals.   

“Elizabeth is an accomplished sustainability professional with a fresh perspective and ideas that will help move our sustainability initiatives forward,” said City Administrator Fritz Sprague. “She has a strong knowledge of current sustainability issues and will be an asset to the City and our community. She makes an excellent fit for Lafayette.” 

We asked Elizabeth a few additional questions to help you get to know her. Check out her answers  below.  

Where did you grow up?  
I was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest - specifically in Seattle, WA.

Do you have any pets, if so what are their names? 
 I have an 18-month old Golden Retriever, who is my partner in crime. Her name is Riley - named after the Pixar film Inside Out.

What show are you currently binge-watching?  
I am currently binge-watching "Down to Earth with Zac Efron" and "A Million Little Things"

What do you like to do in your free time?  
A few things I enjoy doing in my free time are: play volleyball, hike, make pottery, and dance hip hop. Last but certainly not least, spending as much time with Riley! 

What genre of music do you love best?  
Country and Reggaeton.
