[ARCHIVED] Hydrant flushing begins the week of May 17

Hydrant flushing graphic with white hydrant and blue background.

Public Works will begin flushing City water lines using fire hydrants as part of our regular preventative maintenance program to provide quality water to residents the week of May 17. Flushing will start in in the red zone on this map and covers most neighborhoods south of Baseline Road and east of HWY 287. This work will take 3-4 weeks to complete.

Three crew members will flush the water lines of each hydrant for 5 minutes.

  • One crew member will start flushing at hydrant 1 by opening it up to allow the water to flow out, with the next person at hydrant 2 and the third person at hydrant 3.
  • Once hydrant 1 has been opened and flushed, that person will move to hydrant 4, then the second person would “leapfrog” to hydrant 5 until all hydrants in the zone have been opened and flushed.

This process clears our water lines and allows each hydrant to be exercised to ensure they are working properly.

As a result of the flushing process, residents in the immediate vicinity of the work may experience temporary discoloration of their water. This discoloration is harmless silt and air which does not affect the safety of your water. If you experience discoloration in your water after crews have been flushing in your area, clear the pipes in your home by running all water faucets for several minutes.

For questions or additional information, please call Public Works at 303-661-1277.
