[ARCHIVED] Lafayette named 2012 Tree City USA for 18th year

The City of Lafayette was named a 2012 Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation in honor of its commitment to effective urban forest management. This is the 18th year Lafayette has earned the national designation.

Lafayette achieved the recognition by meeting four requirements;
* Sponsoring a tree board or department
* A tree-care ordinance
* An annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita
* An Arbor Day observance and proclamation

Visit the Lafayette Open Space booth on Saturday, April 20 at the JAX ‘s Outdoor Gear Earth Day Celebration for a chance to win a 1 gallon native tree or shrub. Approximately 150 plants will be given away by members of the Lafayette Open Space Advisory Committee to celebrate Arbor Day. Beginning at noon, the trees and shrubs will be given away to the Open Space booth visitors. Native trees and shrubs are more drought tolerant than exotic species and are the types of plants planted on Open Space properties.

Members of the Open Space Advisory Committee will be at JAX Outdoor Gear again on Sunday, April 21, noon-4pm. Stop by and pick up a Parks, Open Space and Trails Map, ask questions about the city's fabulous Open Space Program, or grab a reusable totes from the City of Lafayette.
