[ARCHIVED] Snowy Owl by Stephen Landis

Five foot tall snowy owl with smooth forms and surface

Artist Statement

Clay is the material I prefer to work with.  To me, sculpting in clay is like drawing into three-dimensional space, which is why I prefer to realize my ideas in small clay maquettes rather than on a sketch pad.  Clay is flexible and perfectly supports the movements and fluctuations of my creative process. My inspiration most often manifests itself with the appearance of a form of some sort, which then becomes the starting point for my sculptures. As the form becomes more definable it starts to take on meaning to me and allows me to explore the material and its essence.
Through this search, many themes and images are presented. This is the procedure I go through with each sculpture that I create. What they have in common is the process.
