On Nov. 8, 2022, at approximately 0125 hours officers of the Lafayette Police Department were involved in an officer involved shooting at the Circle K gas station located at 225 W. South Boulder Road, Lafayette, Colorado.

At approximately 0122 hours officers received an Automated License Plate Reader alert stating a stolen vehicle was in the area of South Boulder Road and Dixon Avenue. The stolen vehicle, a silver Toyota Camry, was located at the Circle K gas station at a gas pump unoccupied. As officers arrived, the suspects exited the store to return to the car but fled on foot. The male suspect ran back to the stolen vehicle and began firing a handgun at the officers striking one of the Lafayette officers in the leg. Shots were returned by one officer and the suspect was found deceased in the vehicle at the gas station. The second person involved was detained and there is no threat to the public.

The Lafayette officer was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital and is in stable condition.

The Boulder County Investigation Team, also known as the Boulder Critical Incident Team (BCIT), will investigate the officer’s use of force.  The multi-agency team is designated to investigate use-of-force incidents in which any law enforcement officer within the 20th Judicial District uses deadly, or potentially deadly, physical force against a person, while acting under the color of official law enforcement duties.  The Lafayette Police Department immediately notified the BCIT following the incident.  Consistent with Boulder County protocol, Lafayette PD will not participate in the investigation involving the use of force.

The officer was placed on administrative leave, pursuant to protocol.

No further information is available at this time.
