The Lafayette Police Department, in partnership with the Colorado Auto Theft Prevention Authority (CATPA), is making catalytic converter labeling kits available to the public for use to deter and aid in the prosecution of catalytic converter thefts. Because of the value of precious metals they contain, the theft of catalytic converters has skyrocketed in many Colorado communities.
Kits include all the necessary materials to label and etch a vehicle's catalytic converter for identification purposes. Catalytic converter labeling will allow identification of a catalytic converter in the event it is stolen and later recovered by law enforcement. The unique identification code is entered into a federal database. The kit is simple. Labeling can be attached by the vehicle owner or a trusted auto service provider. Auto service providers may charge to perform this service.
