[ARCHIVED] Artist interviews enhance Art on the Street

Lafayette’s Public Art Committee has enhanced the Art on the Street Program through the use of multiple technology components. Using a grant from Colorado Creative Industries, the committee has developed a series of artists’ interviews available on the city web pages and the City of Lafayette Youtube channel, http://www.youtube.com/user/CityofLafayetteCo. Earlier this year PAC added a phone in feature and QR codes to Art on the Street sculpture signage.

Art on the Street 2013 installed 17 new sculptures late March. Each artist was interviewed; three to five minute interview videos reflect the artist feelings about their sculpture and aspects of their life as an artist. Additionally, each sculpture has a phone number so viewers can hear a recording from the artist. Call 888-827-8566 and use the Art on the Street ArtNumber 2687 to access general information about the program. Press an artist’s number, 1 – 17, to hear from a specific artist. Videos of each artist are available at www.cityoflafayette.com/AOTS.

Sculptures also have a QR code which will take the viewer to an artist’s information page on the city website. Through the City’s website, people will be able to view videos of interviews with the sculptors, information on each artwork, and more. These components are made possible through grant funding from Colorado Creative Industries and Scientific & Cultural Facilities District. This program provides the community with a full access interactive art experience year round.

In addition to the technology enhancements, the Lafayette Cultural Resources Division will host a See & Respond! Art show. Poets and 2-D artists of all kinds are invited to See & Respond to the 2013 Lafayette Colorado Art on the street collection by writing poems or creating 2-D works of art in any medium that are inspired by any of the 2013 Art on the Street sculptures. Cash prizes will be awarded for this juried show. This program is not limited to local artists; finalists will be accepted from a nationwide pool of artists.

The See & Respond Art Show and Art on the Street Meet the Artists Reception, featuring the Art on the Street Sculptures and the works they inspired, will be held in Lafayette Public Library August 2, 6:30 – 9 pm. Prizes will be awarded in multiple categories and the winner of the Art on the Street, Jean Mellblom People’s Choice Award will be announced.

Entries for See & Respond are due July 10, 2013; all artwork is due for installation on August 1. More details are available at www.cityoflafayette.com/CFA.

These unique programs are made possible through generous grant funding from Colorado Creative Industries and Scientific & Cultural Facilities District. More information on the See & Respond Art Show will be available at www.cityoflafayette.com/CFA.
