City Council vacancy process
Due to the unexpected passing of Councilor Tonya Briggs, the Lafayette City Council will be reviewing applications to interview and appoint a replacement to fill this open seat. The timeline is as follows:
- Nov. 6, 2023 -City Council meeting: Council will review applications for vacancy appointment and will select which applicants to interview.
- Nov. 13, 2023- Special City Council meeting: City Council will interview the selected applicants and will hold a public input session immediately following the interviews. Council intends to appoint one of the applicants that same evening.
- Nov. 17, 2023 - Last day for City Council to make the appointment.
The redacted applications are available online for public review, and guidance on how residents can provide input is available at lafayetteco.gov/CityCouncil.
The successful candidate will serve until the first regular City Council meeting following certification of the November 2025 regular City election. It is legally impossible to fill this vacancy in the regular City election on Nov. 7, 2023, because the ballot certification deadline for this year's coordinated election passed on Sept. 8, 2023.
