Dear friends -
My heart is heavy today as we begin to see the devastating aftermath of yesterday’s fires. So many lives have been unexpectedly impacted in a very short amount of time. I feel relief for Lafayette community members who escaped harm, yet am deeply saddened and concerned for our many neighbors who are experiencing tragic losses.
The beacon of light that has shown through this devastation is our persistent community spirit and enduring cooperation. I’m very proud of Lafayette Police and Fire who stepped up at the onset of the grass fires to begin doing what they do best - protecting the safety and well-being of our community. Lafayette first responders were immediately on scene to assist with fire mitigation, safety assessments, and evacuation activities. This effort persisted throughout the night and will continue as long as needed.
Our water supply is safe. Lafayette’s Public Works Department was on standby to assist in a variety of capacities and was protecting our water sources and facilities. They are currently assisting neighboring communities with water resources, and are preparing for the approaching snowstorm. The Lafayette IT Department is also providing technical staff and support to our neighboring cities.
A special thank you to the Lafayette YMCA who is serving as an area evacuation center to provide food, shelter, and other necessities to displaced victims. Lafayette’s Mental Health Co-Responder staff is on-site at the YMCA to provide valuable support that so many community members need at this time.
The residents of Boulder County are resilient. And while we have experienced many tragedies together, I encourage everyone to seek the help and assistance you may need. Whether that be connecting with a displaced loved one or seeking mental support, resources are available for you at boulderoem.com/emergency-status/.
I also ask that we all extend the kind and caring community spirit Boulder County is known for to those who have been directly impacted by the fires. There are many ways you can donate your time, talent, and treasure. In addition to the links below, a list is running on the City’s website.
Again, my best to everyone suffering right now and a warm thank you to all who are, and have, provided assistance.
