Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) Exhibitat The CollectiveOctober 7 - November 20 This colorful group show features several Colorado artists of varying backgrounds, including Susan Simonds' Centaurus High School students who continue the tradition of contributing beautiful cigar box ofrendas (altars). We consulted longtime, Lafayette educator, Lupe Cruz, to create the main ofrenda for the gallery. Members of the public are invited to leave a small note to deceased loved ones at this ofrenda. Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a celebration of remembrance of and communion with deceased family and loved ones. This traditional Mexican celebration is a mixture of indigenous Aztec ritual with Catholicism brought to the region by Spanish conquistadores - observed on November 1 & 2. A Performance by Members of the Balan Na TribeIndigenous Peoples Day CelebrationSunday, October 10, 2021. 2:30 p.m. Native people of North and Central America have creation stories that say the world was formed on a turtle’s back and these lands are known as Turtle Island. Join members of Balan Na (House of Jaguar) Tribe for a celebration of Indigenous Peoples Day. They will share stories and songs that have common themes with other tribes and share new stories and songs that are being created to address current issues such as climate change and fires. In the Balan Na tradition, and other tribes as well, the red sun is seen as a sign of change and transformation. Join Balan Na and the Lafayette Arts & Cultural Resources Department for a different perspective about what is happening in the world today. If weather permits some or all of this celebration will take place on the north lawn of the library. Free Pre-registration is strongly encouraged. Mask wearing indoors is required. Use your voice in the distribution of grants and creating interdisciplinary cultural arts programming and events. Help us deepen, inform, and broaden access to our public programming! The Lafayette Cultural Arts Commission (LCAC) looks for citizens who want to plan, assist, advocate for, and participate in the cultural arts. A commissioner does not have to be an artist. One must believe that the spectrum of cultural arts is an important part of what makes Lafayette vital and special and want to commit time to that idea. We also seek to reach under-served populations in Lafayette and hope you can assist us in those goals.
