This morning we were contacted by a Library customer who received a fraudulent email which appeared to be an overdue notice from Lafayette Public Library billing her for an overdue item. While the email looked official, it was not from Lafayette Public Library or the Flatirons Library Consortium. While we send out overdue notices, the City of Lafayette does not ask for online payments, nor do we charge overdue fines.

Overdue notices have been suspended until we have a better sense of the scope of this problem. We have reported the matter to the Lafayette Police Department and an investigation is underway. The Lafayette IT department does not believe the problem lies within our systems and the Library systems administrator for the Flatirons Library Consortium does not believe the problem is related to the Library consortium database.

The reported fraudulent overdue notice came from the address: publiclibrary@notice-compliance.gov which appears to be a known scam across the country:
  • The fraudulent email seems to always be about a missing copy of the "Da Vinci Code."
  • The fraudulent email will typically inform the customer they owe $97.14 for the lost book.
  • There will be a link for a pay portal - do not click on the link!
  • Our emails will never provide an online link for payment.
  • These emails do not seem to be connected in any way to a customer's account or other confidential information.

Emails about overdue and lost items, general bills, holds, reminders, as well as welcome messages, will always come from our official domain: no-reply@flatironslibrary.org

Official newsletters from the Lafayette Public Library and City of Lafayette will come from listserv@civicplus.com.

Confirmations of Library event, appointment, or space bookings will come from alerts@mail.libcal.com.

If you receive an email that doesn’t seem to be from a trusted source:
  • Do not open it
  • Delete it immediately
  • Do not download any attachments
  • Never click links that appear in the message
  • Do not reply to sender and do not call phone numbers provided in the message
  • When in doubt, contact the Library at 303-665-5200
