Volunteers Needed!

Art Night Out 2022

The Art Night Out event needs over 100 volunteers per month. Volunteer shifts are 1.5 hours. Everyone who volunteers for 1.5 hours will receive a coupon for a free beverage. This always-free public event is held on the second Friday of the month, May through September 2022, from 5-9 pm. The first of the festival series starts at 5pm on Friday, May 13, with Chicano Heat. The dates for the upcoming season are July 8, Aug. 12, and Sept. 9. You can volunteer to help with setup and takedown, selling alcohol tickets and checking IDs, gatekeeper, support recycling and trash efforts, and other opportunities. There are a variety of volunteer opportunities for individuals and groups to be part of something that supports the entire community. Please come out and volunteer with us and make the Arts Night Out event a huge success. Complete volunteer applications and find out more at lafayetteco.gov/ANO.

Coptic stitch/exposed spine bookbinding

July 10, 10am-3pm Join book artist Brenda Gallagher to craft your very own journal using the Coptic stitch binding. Creating your book involves sewing folded signatures with linking stitches to produce a braided-looking exposed spine sewing structure. By the end of the workshop, you will have completed your book, and have the skill to make more on your own.  $130, Class fee includes all materials. 

Intro to Slipcases

July 30, 9am-4pm In this one-day class, David Ashley will lead students in the construction of three different kinds of slipcases.  We will start with a basic Folded-Paper slipcase, then a paper-lined slipcase made of boards covered in bookcloth, and our last project will be a slipcase with a rounded top and bottom featuring finger cut-outs lined with very thin-pared leather, for a truly elegant finish. $180, Class fee includes all materials. Classes at the Book Arts League, Ewing farmhouse in Lafayette; 1915 N 95th St., Lafayette bookartsleague.org

Put your organizational powers and passion for inclusion to work for the greater good. The Lafayette Cultural Arts Commission (LCAC) is seeking new members. Support the arts and culture of our community. Promote beauty, understanding, and democracy! LCAC commissioners connect artists and educators with grant monies and work closely with the Arts and Cultural Resources Department to plan and implement programs for the community. The Public Art Committee (PAC), a subcommittee of LCAC, is an advisory group appointed by City Council to review proposals and make recommendations regarding the selection and display of public artwork. The PAC is also responsible for advising the Arts and Cultural Resources Department regarding the administration, management, maintenance, and repair of public artwork. Meetings are held on the 2nd Wednesday of the month, 7pm at The Collective Community Arts Center, 201 N. Public Road.

2022 Art on the Street and See & Respond!

The Lafayette Arts & Cultural Resources Department and Public Art Committee (PAC) are excited to present Art on the Street (AOTS) Lafayette's annual sculpture on loan program. AOTS 2022 features an impressive collection of unique works by artists from around the nation. The selection curated by PAC provides the community with a refreshing diversity of subjects, materials, and scale. Sculptures are located on Public Road, East Simpson Street, and at the Arts HUB.

Lafayette was very fortunate to be one of the first cities in the country to host artists, Helanius J. Wilkins and Ryder Turner, in their project The Conversation Series: Stitching the Geopolitical Quilt to Re-Body Belonging. It has been bonding and invigorating to be inspired by Helanius' unique and loving vision, participate in revealing Belonging Conversations, learn more about ourselves in Ryder's movement workshops, and engage in the culmination of the project - the Choreographic Ritual - at Waneka Lake, which will be documented as a piece of the "quilt". You can follow this incredible project as it continues its trajectory around the nation by joining the mailing list.

Forever in My Heart 2 evolved from a series of smaller sculptures I gave to people who were experiencing the pain of losing their pets. This sculpture reflects both the joy and pain of having a pet and serves as a reminder that, even though they are gone physically, they are still in your heart. I envision Forever in My Heart 2 located in a quiet place where people can reflect on the good times they had together. “Forever in My Heart 2 evolucionó a partir de una serie de esculturas más pequeñas que entregué a personas que estaban experimentando el dolor de perder a sus mascotas. Esta escultura refleja tanto la alegría como el dolor de tener una mascota y sirve como un recordatorio de que, aunque se hayan ido físicamente, todavía están en tu corazón. Me imagino Forever in My Heart 2 ubicado en un lugar tranquilo donde las personas puedan reflexionar sobre los buenos momentos que pasaron juntos.
