Volunteers Needed!

Art Night Out 2022

The Art Night Out event needs over 100 volunteers per month. Volunteer shifts are 1.5 hours. Everyone who volunteers for 1.5 hours will receive a coupon for a free beverage. This always-free public event is held on the second Friday of the month, May through September 2022, from 5-9 pm. The first of the festival series starts at 5pm on Friday, May 13, with Chicano Heat. The dates for the upcoming season are July 8, Aug. 12, and Sept. 9. You can volunteer to help with setup and takedown, selling alcohol tickets and checking IDs, gatekeeper, support recycling and trash efforts, and other opportunities. There are a variety of volunteer opportunities for individuals and groups to be part of something that supports the entire community. Please come out and volunteer with us and make the Arts Night Out event a huge success. Complete volunteer applications and find out more at lafayetteco.gov/ANO.

Arts Outside Workshop 

Sunsets and Transitions in Poetry and Nature  

Saturday, Aug. 20, 6-8pm 16 and older: Join poet Larry LaVerdure and naturalist Martin Ogle as we immerse in a sunset from the Kneebone Open Space grassland in Lafayette. We will explore how poetry captures the effect of change, and take  prompts from the setting sun and the flora and fauna around us as we experience the transition from day to night. We will share poetry and Martin will speak to the environmental flux and the natural history of the space. Please bring your own writing tools and paper, light-weight portable seating, water bottles, sunscreen, bug repellent and a willingness to be awed by nature. Some cool tea will be provided. Taller con Artes Afuera 

Atardeceres y transiciones en la poesia y naturaleza 
Sabado, 20 de agosto, 6 a 8pm, mayores de 16 años. Únase al poeta Larry LaVerdure y al naturalista Martin Ogle mientras nos sumergimos en el atardecer del sol desde la pradera de Kneebone Open Space en Lafayette. Exploraremos cómo la poesía captura el efecto del cambio y tomaremos indicaciones del sol poniente y la flora y fauna que nos rodea a medida que experimentamos la transición del día a la noche. People In General - Fort Collins indie poppers are aptly named for the theme of their upcoming single "icicic." Seeking universality in songwriting is usually a great idea. If lightning strikes and the writer finds a deeply human moment experienced by not just one demographic, but, well, people in general, that sentiment can make for a great tune. 
Tiny Humans - High energy 3 piece band out of Denver with a mix of emo, garage rock, punk and grunge. Tiny Humans consists of Chris Mercer on guitar and vocals, Dave Wolfkowski on bass and Zack Noe on drums. Formed in 2020 over the pandemic, after Chris broke up their previous band Sliver. Dave also plays in a band called Swindlin Hearts and Zack used to play in a band called Alter Girls. 
Interpretive Tyranny - Denver Alt Rock band Interpretive Tyranny, Connor on Guitar, Hayden on Drums, Alex on Bass, and Marcus at Lead Vocal.

Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2022 Lafayette’s Cultural Arts Commission (LCAC) is pleased to announce that the 2023 Arts in Community Grant application is available! LCAC invites applications from Lafayette artists and cultural arts organizations and groups. Artists and cultural arts groups outside of Lafayette are also welcome to apply for any event(s) that would be held in Lafayette. Awards are usually $2,000 or less. Projects must occur between Jan. 1, 2023, and Dec. 15, 2023. To apply and for more details, visit lafayetteco.gov/Grants

Community Ideas Box

Throughout the month of August An awesome community ideas box has been set-up at The Collective Community Arts Center to receive ideas from you - Lafayette community members! We are looking for ideas in response to the question: What is an actionable way we can collectively impact positive change in our Lafayette, CO community?
What is this for? Your suggestions will play a significant role in the next phase of our collaboration through The Conversation Series: Stitching the Geopolitical Quilt to Re-Body Belonging.  Ryder and I will return fall 2022 for Phase 2 – one that centers supporting the community in collectively impacting positive change. During a community gathering session (to be announced later), the box will be opened, offerings will be shared, and brainstorming/strategy-planning will take place to collectively work toward the realization of agreed upon actions. Ryder and I are deeply appreciative and our lives are richer for our exchanges with you over the past months. We look forward to reconnecting with you all very soon and continuing our journey!

Durante todo el mes de agosto Se ha instalado una increíble caja de ideas de la comunidad en The Collective Community Arts Center para recibir ideas de ustedes, ¡miembros de la comunidad de Lafayette! The current kit is a Woven Bowl:  Keep your small trinkets and treasures in a bowl that you weave yourself using a paper plate and yarn. Through Our Eyes Revitalization Project 

A mural project by Jessica Manzanares   

The Public Art Committee (PAC) awarded artist, Jessica Manzanares, a Public Art Grant for her community mural project, Through Our Eyes. Last June the mural was installed on the west and north facing walls of the Lumberyards building at N. Public Road and E. Geneseo Street. Unfortunately, a rainstorm battered the work immediately after installation, peeling the uncured images from the wall. Manzanares gave permission to the Arts & Cultural Resources Department (ACRD) to revitalize the mural with more enduring materials. Proyecto de revitalización de A Través de Nuestros Ojos 

Un proyecto mural de Jessica Manzanares  

El Comité de Arte Público (PAC) otorgó a la artista, Jessica Manzanares, una Subvencion de Arte Público por su proyecto de mural comunitario, A través de nuestros ojos. En junio pasado, el mural se instaló en las paredes orientadas al oeste y al norte del edificio Lumberyards en N. Public Road y E. Geneseo Street. Desafortunadamente, una tormenta azotó el trabajo inmediatamente después de la instalación y despegó las imágenes sin curar de la pared. Manzanares dio permiso al Departamento de Recursos Culturales y Artisticos (ACRD) para revitalizar el mural con materiales más duraderos. Con más apoyo de PAC y una generosa contribución del fondo caritativo de Tom y Rebecca Razo, nuevos paneles murales fotográficos grabados se instalarán en septiembre y durarán mucho tiempo. The Public Art Committee (PAC) is an advisory group appointed by City Council to review proposals and make recommendations regarding the selection and display of public artwork. The PAC is also responsible for advising the Arts and Cultural Resources Department regarding the administration, management, maintenance, and repair of public artwork. Meetings are held on the 2nd Wednesday of the month, 7pm at The Collective Community Arts Center, 201 N. Public Road.

Monarch Metamorphosis Garden Throne

For Monarch Metamorphosis Garden Throne, I combined my love of gardening and mosaics. I sculpted dense polystyrene styrofoam into the shape of a throne.  This was then covered in wire mesh and concrete to create a solid substrate to apply mosaics on.   The mosaics used were Italian tiles, stained glass, and glass beads.  The butterflies, bees, dragonflies, hot air balloons, and hawks were hand-sculpted and painted.  All the materials selected were carefully researched to ensure that they can withstand the climate extremes we see in Colorado.
My formal training is as a Mechanical Engineer. I worked for IBM in Robotics, a Thermal Laboratory, and System Analysis. Since 2018, I have turned my attention to developing my mosaic skills. I love the color and whimsy in nature and use these as the inspiration for many of my art pieces. For example, my husband and I raise chickens and I recently repurposed an old window from Ecocycle to create a colorful, glass-on-glass mosaic “window” of flowers for our chicken coop.  http://sunnyskies611.wixsite.com/website

Para Monarch Metamorphosis Garden Throne, combiné mi amor por la jardinería y los mosaicos. Esculpí espuma de poliestireno denso en forma de trono. Luego, esto se cubrió con malla de alambre y concreto para crear un sustrato sólido para aplicar mosaicos. Los mosaicos utilizados fueron azulejos italianos, vidrieras y cuentas de vidrio. Las mariposas, abejas, libélulas, globos aerostáticos y halcones fueron esculpidos y pintados a mano. Todos los materiales seleccionados se investigaron cuidadosamente para garantizar que puedan soportar los extremos climáticos que vemos en Colorado. 
Mi formación formal es como Ingeniera Mecánica. Trabajé para IBM en Robótica, Laboratorio Térmico y Análisis de Sistemas.
