Lafayette Learns: Gaia Theory with Martin Ogle

Thursday, November 30, 2023

Lafayette Learns presents naturalist Martin Ogle for "Gaia Theory: Model and Metaphor for the 21st Century," with accompaniment from musicians of the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra.

How do new scientific understandings of Earth as a living system intersect with cultural understandings, ancient and new? What implications do new insights into our human relationship with Earth have as we grapple with our future? Martin Ogle brings a 37-year career as a naturalist, Earth scientist, and storyteller to bear in exploring these questions and applying them to the challenges of our day. The title of this event is taken from a 2006 conference that Martin and colleagues organized at George Mason University in Arlington, VA. This conference featured a wide variety of speakers including scientists, historians, those in the humanities and others. In his presentation at Lafayette Library, he will take a similar multi-disciplinary approach to understanding our relationship to Earth and how to address climate change, biodiversity loss, water shortages, and more.

Musicians from the Boulder Philharmonic will be a part of this program, adding an exciting dimension to blending our intellectual and emotional exploration of a living planet. No registration is required. For more information, contact Martin Ogle.
